2017 Bednarik Pinot Noir

2017 Bednarik Pinot Noir

Willamette Valley AVA
13.6% Alcohol

This single vineyard bottling comes from the cool Coast Range outside of Cherry Grove. The 6 acre, own-rooted vineyard was planted to Pommard and Wädensvil in 1988 by William Bednarik. The 2017 vintage was a milder growing season with plenty of winter rain to sustain this dry-farmed vineyard.

We kept the winemaking very raw and experimental as we get to know this site. We tried a variety of destemmed and whole cluster fermentations, but this year the 100% destemmed fermentation with equal portions of Pommard and Wädensvil fit the bill. Spontaneous fermentation took hold after four days and completed in ten days. After pressing, the wine was aged on the gross lees for 10 months in neutral oak barrels.

This wine is a great example of the interplay between the two classic Oregon pinot noir clones. Pommard plays darker and more tannic, and Wädensvil brings more finesse and a higher note of light fruit with hints of watermelon, cranberry, and ruby red grapefruit. Co-fermented they form the sweetest expression of this late-ripening, higher acid site.
